Despite international restrictions on mercury-containing cosmetics, more than 20 skin-lightening products previously identified on banned-product lists were still available through Amazon, Temu, and TikTok Shop-related marketplaces, according to a Reuters review published on September 16, 2026. Reuters also found similar listings through Amazon third-party marketplaces in France, India, the UAE, and Belgium. Some removed products were later relisted under different names or by different sellers.

Importantly, Reuters noted that the products it reviewed did not list mercury in their ingredient labels, and Reuters could not independently confirm the presence of mercury in every product. The findings nevertheless highlight the risks of buying skin-lightening products from unclear or unverified sources.

Why Mercury Is Dangerous

Mercury can interfere with melanin production, creating a skin-lightening effect. But mercury is also toxic and can damage organs including the kidneys and nervous system. The kidneys are particularly important because mercury exposure from skin-lightening products has been linked to kidney damage.

Consumers should be cautious with products that have no complete ingredient list, unclear manufacturers, unknown sellers, or promises of extremely fast whitening.

What Actually Works on Dark Spots?

For uneven skin tone and dark spots, ingredients such as Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Azelaic Acid, Retinoids, and Kojic Acid are commonly used in evidence-based skincare. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is also essential because UV exposure can worsen pigmentation.

The key takeaway: fast whitening does not mean better skincare. Check the ingredients, know the source, and choose products designed to improve pigmentation safely over time.
